Symbols

The star and crescent symbol is most well-known to represent Islam. But some may not know that this symbol is not of Islamic origin. The symbol was adopted during the spread of Islam and has become a part of the community. Historians say it was the insignia of the Ottoman Empire. Furthermore, this symbol is not even acknowledged by Muslims as a traditional symbol. The star and crescent moon were due to “cultural diffusion and the spread of Islam to the Ottoman Turks who ruled a large area and also put the crescent moon and star symbol on their flag. It has since become associated with Islam.” (religionfacts.com, 2012).

Other Islamic symbols include the name of Allah written in Arabic, Rub-el-Hizb which is the Islamic architectural designs they mostly follow and the color green which is the color representation in Islam.
